The quick answer
Copy the video's link, paste it into a thumbnail downloader such as ThumbnailLift, and save the largest size it finds. For most videos that's maxresdefault, the full 1280 x 720 image. The whole process takes about ten seconds and works the same way for regular videos, Shorts, and youtu.be links.
If you'd rather not use a tool at all, every YouTube thumbnail also lives at a predictable web address that you can open directly. Both methods are explained below, along with how to do it on a phone and what to do when the image comes out small or with black bars.
Method 1: download a thumbnail with ThumbnailLift
1. Copy the video link. On a computer, copy the address from your browser bar while the video is open. On a phone, tap Share under the video, then Copy link.
2. Paste it into the tool. Open ThumbnailLift, paste the link into the box, and press Generate. The tool reads the video ID from the link and checks which image sizes YouTube has stored for that video.
3. Pick a size and download. The sizes are listed largest first. Choose maxresdefault for the best quality, or use Download All (ZIP) to save every available size at once.
The tool also shows the video title so you can copy it, and it can generate a QR code for the video if you want to share it in print.
Method 2: open the thumbnail URL directly
Every YouTube video has an ID: the 11 characters after v= in a watch link, after youtu.be/ in a short link, or after /shorts/ in a Shorts link. For example, in youtube.com/watch?v=abc123XYZ_-, the ID is abc123XYZ_-.
Put that ID into this address and open it in your browser: https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. Replace VIDEO_ID with the real ID. The full-size thumbnail opens as a plain image, and you can right-click it and choose Save image as.
If you see a small grey placeholder instead of the thumbnail, that video has no maxres version. Try the next size down by changing the end of the address to sddefault.jpg, hqdefault.jpg, or mqdefault.jpg.
This method works fine for one-off downloads. A downloader is faster when you need several videos, because it tries every size for you and skips the ones that don't exist.
How to download a thumbnail on a phone
On Android or iPhone, open the YouTube app, tap Share below the video, and choose Copy link. Then open ThumbnailLift in your phone's browser, paste the link, and tap Generate.
To save the image, tap the download button for the size you want. Depending on your phone and browser, you may instead see the image open in a new tab; in that case, press and hold the image and choose Download image on Android or Save to Photos on iPhone.
Downloaded images land in your phone's Downloads folder or photo gallery, just like any other saved picture.
Downloading thumbnails from YouTube Shorts
Shorts use the same kind of video ID as regular videos, so the same methods work. Copy the Short's link (it looks like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID) and paste it into the tool, or use the ID in the direct image address.
Keep in mind that Shorts are vertical but YouTube's stored thumbnail images are horizontal. Depending on the Short, the saved image may show the cover frame cropped or with bars on the sides. That's how YouTube stores it, not a problem with the download.

Fixing blurry thumbnails and black bars
Black bars at the top and bottom: you saved one of the 4:3 sizes (sddefault, hqdefault, or default). A 16:9 thumbnail inside a 4:3 frame gets letterboxed. Download maxresdefault or mqdefault for a clean widescreen image.
Blurry or small image: you probably saved a small size, or the video has no maxres version. Older videos and low-resolution uploads often top out at 480 x 360 or 640 x 480. There's no way to get a sharper image than the largest one YouTube stored.
Nothing loads at all: check that the video is public or unlisted. Thumbnails of private and deleted videos can't be downloaded.
